Town set for Christmas tree competition
Snaith's Christmas tree competition will be 'a show and a half', one of the organisers has said.
The annual competition, in Snaith Methodist Chapel, gets under way tomorrow and, for the first time, some of the trees will be lit.
"Some of the schools have entered this year," said a spokesperson. "Pollington Primary, Snaith Primary and Snaith School. It gets the children involved.
"People are looking forward to it - there's a lot of expectation and hard work."
At least 16 of the 24 entries will be lit, and the spokesperson said: "It's going to be a show and a half!"
Trees will be on display from tomorrow until December 21, and the chapel will be open between 11am and 4pm on Saturday December 1, 8 and 15 and between 2pm and 4pm on Sunday 2, 9 and 16.
Visitors will be able to choose six trees - first, second and third in both the junior and senior competitions.
The beginning of the festivities will be marked tomorrow with a concert called Magic and Music Night, at the chapel, at 7pm.
All the trees will be on show, and there will be magic, songs and carols. Tickets are £3.
A second concert will close the competition, which takes place on December 21 at 7.30pm and features the Anston Male Voice Choir. Tickets are £6.
Ian Cawsey, MP for Brigg and Goole, will attend the second concert to hand out the six prizes.
Guests are advised to take a cushion to both concerts, as the seating is on wooden pews.
The entrants for the competition are: Junior category - Brownies, Guides, Mother and Toddler Group, Pollington Primary School, Snaith Childminders, Snaith Primary School, Snaith Rainbows, Snaith and Cowick Play Scheme and The Snaith School.
Senior category - Abbey Belles, Chapel Fundraising Committee, Come and Sing, Curtey's Miniatures and 1st Corps, Ladies' Circle, NSPCC, Priory Church, Readers' Group, St John Ambulance, Snaith and Cowick Together, Snaith Stitchers, The Goddards, Wesley Guild, Women's Institute and Young Wives.
The trees will be labelled with a number so people can base their decision on the decoration and not the organisation.
