Goole Town Council is to ask East Riding Council for a report and update on economic development in the Goole area.

Cllr Kester Dean expressed concerns about the economic mix of Goole while discussing a planning application by Stoneferry Estates Ltd for a haulage contractor's depot on the M62 trading estate.

Cllr Dean said: "We have one of the highest-performing schools in the region in Vermuyden and we can expect 50 per cent of them to go on and get degrees. We need a more diverse economy in Goole, with better opportunities for young people. I don't think this is good enough."

Cllr Jane Marsden said: "I think what they are trying to do is tidy up what was a messy area. Not everyone wants to go and get degrees."

Cllr Shirley Marshall added: "It is a big area that needs filling and I wish the best of luck to people that will try and provide these jobs. Jobs are jobs."

It was agreed that Alan Menzies, assistant chief executive of economic development of East Riding of Yorkshire Council should be asked to give councillors an update on development in the Goole area at a future meeting. There were no objections to the Stoneferry Estate.

Cllr Dean commented: "Goole is becoming dependent on one thing, what with the new Tesco distribution centre etc.

'Think of mining, for example, that resulted in mass unemployment. I know its unfashionable to think in the future but Goole is putting all its eggs into one basket and eventually that basket is going to break."
