'What's lurking under your stairs?'

Humberside Fire and Rescue are urging householders to look in their understairs cupboards after a spate of fires which have been made worse by too many items being stored there.

Officers from the fire service are asking people to relocate items to a safer and more suitable location, such as a garage or shed, if at all possible.

Spokesperson Laura Hanson said: "Reducing the amount of clutter in the understairs cupboards can dramatically cut down on the risk of fire in your home.

"We ask that people test their smoke alarms once a week and that the batteries are replaced every year."

Humberside Fire and Rescue is offering all residents a free home fire safety visit. Firefighters visit homes, talk to people about fire risks and fit free smoke alarms if they are needed. Call 0808 141 8282 to arrange a home fire safety visit.
