Charity organisation Scope is asking people in Goole to 'go greener' when they donate their unwanted items to its shops - by dropping them off during their regular shopping trips instead of relying on its home-collection service.

The move by the national disability organisation will help make donating to its charity shops in Goole more environmentally friendly.

Scope distributes around six million collection bags each year nationally, yet only around 15 per cent of these are returned. By promoting shop drop-ins, Scope hopes to reduce waste and cut down on unnecessary van journeys in the area.

Donating in person will also have an additional benefit by reducing the activity of opportunists and bogus-collectors who sometimes take charity donations left outside houses.

Sylvia Thomas, manager of the Scope shop in Goole said: "We're not asking people to make a special trip, but to drop off goods in person as part of their regular outing or shopping trip into town.

"In this way, you are doing your bit for the environment as well as supporting Scope. Everything that is sold raises money towards our work supporting disabled people to achieve equality."

It is estimated drop-in collections could save the charity £1 million per year that could instead be spent on vital services for disabled people and their families. However, Scope will still offer a pick-up service for people that need it, for example for older or disabled people who may find it difficult to get to their local shop.
