A Carlton pensioner was left bruised and battered after she was allegedly attacked in the street by a teenage girl.

72-year-old Mrs Beryl Barber, of St Mary's Close, was attacked in High Street in Carlton on October 22, this year, and before a court this week charged with the delivering the beating was a 14-year-old Carlton girl.

The teenager, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, made a first appearance before the Selby Youth Court sitting in York on Tuesday morning on a charge of assaulting Mrs Barber, occasioning her actual bodily harm.

Mrs Sandra Keen, appearing for the 14-year-old as an agent on behalf of her Leeds-based solicitor, said: "This is a serious allegation".

She asked for the case to be adjourned so that the teenager's solicitor would have the time to take full instructions from her.

No plea was taken from the girl and she was admitted to conditional bail until Tuesday, December 11, when she will re-appear before the York Youth Court.

Mr Martin Butterworth, prosecuting, confirmed that the defendant had no previous convictions.
