A local bid to bring Christmas to the servicemen and women in Iraq and Afghanistan has proved a major success - and it's still not too late to send a parcel.

The Christmas Fit For Heroes appeal was set up earlier this month by Swinefleet resident Darren Smith, whose son Danny is currently serving in Afghanistan with the Royal Marines.

Members of the community have been encouraged to donate sweets, toiletries, biscuits and books to the appeal, and so far, it has been a great success.

It is still not too late to make a donation to the appeal, as local residents have until December 5 to put together a Christmas box.

If you would like to send a Christmas box, please leave it at Goole Library on Wednesdays only, between 11am and 2pm, or at the Goole Times offices in Boothferry Road, on any weekday.

Please do not wrap your donation, but wrapping paper can be added, as parcels will be wrapped after a customs declaration is completed.
