News Ten pint glass attack lands man in court
A Goole man who smashed a glass over the head of another after a heavy drinking session has been given a community sentence.
Jason Pettican (35), of Dempster Avenue, appeared at the town's magistrates' court on Tuesday accused of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He admitted the charge, which relates to an incident on Sunday, September 30.
Julie Laverack Glanville, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said Mr Pettican and the complainant were standing at the bar of a public house on South Street in Old Goole at 9.15pm. The court heard that Mr Pettican, who had consumed around ten pints of cider and an unknown quantity of Jack Daniels, was with his partner.
Mr Pettican became annoyed about a conservation regarding another woman, Mrs Laverack Glanville said, and hit the complainant with a glass on his head. He also punched him three times.
The complainant went to hospital for treatment but did not need stitches. His injuries were described as "superficial lacerations'.
Mr Pettican was arrested and admitted the assault in an interview.
His solicitor told the court was told that the complainant was "chatting up" Mr Pettican's girlfriend.
"There had been a certain amount of provocation," he said. "My client had been in drink and he lost his cool for a split second. He's obviously very sorry about it.'
Magistrates ordered a report to be prepared by the probation service before ordering Mr Pettican to carry out a 12-month community sentence, which includes 130 hours of unpaid work and a supervision order.
