Mixed result for Van Dijk Nurseries

Success was bittersweet for Van Dijk Nurseries recently when one long-running planning application was approved by East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) whilst the other met with rejection.

An application put forward by the company for the erection of a building for the packing and distribution of horticultural produce in Common Lane, North Cave was finally approved, after months of deferment, when members of ERYC's planning committee met on Thursday, November 8.

The proposal includes sunken loading bays, a packing line area, cold storage areas and offices, a canteen, plant room and 30 car parking spaces, and was looked upon favourably by members of the planning committee as the site is situated close to the motorway network for distribution, and is therefore considered to accord with the Development Plan.

But success was tempered when another application put forward by Van Dijk Nurseries was refused on the same day by the planning committee.

The application involved the erection of glass housing and associated works on land north of Cowslip Cottage on Canal Side East, Newport, and was looked upon favourably by planning officers.

But members of the planning committee voted to refuse the application on the grounds that the site was deemed inappropriate and out of context with the character of the local area.

The outcome of the planning application reflects the views of a number of nearby residents, who opposed the proposal. Prior to the refusal of the application, ERYC received 23 letters of objection, one letter of comment and a petition of 28 signatures.

In a recent letter to this newspaper, a nearby resident raised concerns over the effect the application would have on open countryside.

The resident said: "We hope the planning committee will reject the application and do its utmost to protect the countryside and prevent the growth of commercial sprawl on greenfield sites."
