Haltemprice and Howden MP David Davis and prospective Goole MP Andrew Percy are demanding swifter action to bring breast-screening rates for women in East Yorkshire into line with Government targets.

The Humberside Breast Screening Service provides screening for all women within the former Humberside area.

David Davis, MP, said: 'Just seven per cent of women aged between 50 and 70 are presently being screened within the Government's 36-month target. This means that most women in our area are waiting much longer than this to be screened for breast cancer. Clearly, these figures are unacceptable and I am calling for swifter action to bring these figures into line with the target of 36 months.

"I have raised this issue in Parliament, where I have laid down a question seeking answers as to what is being done to ensure that the Humberside Breast Screening Service hits the target of 36 months. Failure to do so could obviously have serious consequences for some women as early detection of breast cancer is key to fighting that dreadful disease."

Prospective Goole MP Andrew Percy added: "Over the past few months a number of women across the area have contacted me to say that they are one of those women who have not been seen within the 36 month period.

"One woman I recently spoke with recently had actually waited an extra 10 months over the target for her screening. These delays are clearly unacceptable and I hope that the Health Trusts will continue to work to bring the screening times within target.' (22-11-22 SU)
