Comedian in running to scoop £1,000 prize

A student from Goole is in with a chance of winning £1,000 in a regional comedy competition.
Ian Smith (18), of Dunhill Road, will compete for the 'Other Side New Act of the Year Award' on December 1.
He will be up against around 15 other comedians and if successful, will win £1,000 and the chance to gig at Other Side clubs on the Yorkshire coast.
"I was really, really happy when I found out," said Ian. "And quite relieved - it's very tough competition.
"I'll try to use my best material in the competition."
Ian, who is studying media and communications at Goldsmiths University in London, was one of 64 acts to start in the competition.
He won his one-on-one heat in Doncaster, and a one-on-one semi-final, both of which were against more experienced comedians.
He has continued his gigs in London, and told the Goole Times: "It's going really well. I'm just settling in and finding the right places to gig. My friends have been really supportive.
"I'm hopeful about the final, and I'd be disappointed if I didn't win."
Ian's success in the Other Side follows a semi-final performance in the So You Think You're Funny? competition at the Edinburgh Festival, and gigs in Goole and Howden.
"I enjoy making people laugh - it's a good feeling," he said.
