Goole Town Mayor's Charity Concert will take place this Saturday at St John's Parish Church in Goole.

The concert will feature Sharlston Male Voice Choir and Valentina Davis, a Russian pianist.

The choir was formed in 1909 under the leadership of Matthew Wood, a Sharlston Colliery pit deputy. It began from an unlikely alliance of local miners and local Primitive Methodists.

The main objectives of the choir have remained constant since its formation. They are to promote male choral singing and to assist charitable and other social causes.

Valentina Davis is a Russian concert pianist and classically trained musician. She began playing the piano at seven and later on graduated from one of Russia's best-known music conservatorias in Saratov. She now teaches piano to talented musicians in Doncaster.

Goole Town Mayor Jean Kitchen said: "I have seen Sharlston Male Voice Choir at Doncaster Mansion House before and it was excellent. They were there doing the Doncaster Mayor's charity concert and I approached them to see if they would come and do Goole.

"They really are good. I am sure everyone will enjoy it."

The event starts at 7pm on Saturday and tickets are £5. There will also be refreshments and a raffle. Tickets are available from Goole Town Council, St John's Parish Church or by contacting Jean Kitchen on 01405 762389.
