An Eastrington woman received much-deserved recognition for all her work in the community last week when she was handed a personal achievement award by a local disability charity.

Following a number of strokes Lesley Jones has been left wheelchair-bound since 1990 but has continued to keep herself busy by carrying out valuable work in the community.

She deals with the accounts for local charity, the Goole and District Coalition of Physical Disabilities, and is also responsible for putting together local newsletter, the Eastrington Echo.

Lesley also suffers from short-term memory loss, which can make compiling a newsletter more difficult, but she always fulfils her role and ensures that the newsletter is issued to local residents on time, once every two months.

Last Friday, Lesley's hard work paid off when she was granted this year's personal achievement award by the Goole and District Coalition of Physical Disabilities.

"I'm surprised that I received this, because I always think that there are others that do more than me," Lesley told the Goole Times.

"I enjoy the work that I do because it makes my brain work and keeps me out of mischief!"

David Davis, MP for Howden, visited Lesley last week to congratulate her on her recent success, along with Cliff Woolas, president of the Goole and District Coalition of Physcial Disabilities. Mr Davis said: "There are a wide range of people that receive this award each year, and I think it is a great idea.

"Lesley should be proud, it is a great honour."
