More trains from Howden railway station and changing commuter patterns were hot topics at a recent meeting between the Humber and Wolds Rural Community Council (HWRCC) and Community Rail Humber.

The groups met to discuss changing commuter patterns with a view to improving services at Howden station.

David Walford, the rail development officer at Community Rail Humber, said that a number of regular commuters to Leeds had offered useful feedback about the rail services and the changing travel patterns of commuters.

"Historically, most people who commuted out of Howden went to Hull, York or Goole, but with the booming economy of the Leeds area and increases in property prices, more people are commuting to West Yorkshire," he said.

"The train operators need to review this situation and ascertain if it is practical to increase the number of trains stopping at Howden. Hull Trains have already identified an increase in the market for rail travel to London; now Transpennine Express will review their services.

"Northern Rail are looking at facilities and several issues on the station. Also under review is a possible bus link to the station from Howden and Goole town centres."

It was stressed that changes may take some time because of the impact on other train services, but the train operators stressed that they are always keen to try to adapt to changing travel patterns.

The matter of car parking capacity at the station is also being scrutinised as part of the review.

Mr Walford has thanked comm-uters for raising issues in such a constructive manner, and added that when the train operators have studied the timetables and train paths to Leeds, a further meeting is expected to take place.
