Network Rail is appealing to the public for information after almost half a mile of signalling cable was stolen from the railway at Thorne on October 30.

The cable was taken from near the Thorne Moorends crossing in the Moorends Road area of Thorne.

The signalling team found the fault on the line shortly after 8.40pm but services were disrupted for several hours as repair works were carried out.

Dyan Crowther, route director for Network Rail, said: "This was no small job and it is entirely possible that someone saw something while the theft was being carried out.

"This is not a victimless crime: the travelling public has been delayed and money and resources which should be going into improving railway services now have to be spent replacing this cable.

"We are working very closely with the British Transport Police (BTP) to prevent these thefts and are seeking the toughest penalties for thieves who are caught. I would ask anyone who has information to contact the police."

Detective Chief Inspector Danny Snee from BTP added: "The selfish and dangerous actions of these thieves have resulted in major disruption to the rail network throughout the area.

"We are determined to catch those responsible and I am therefore appealing for anyone who has information to call British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 quoting incident number 607 of October 30 2007."
