Turbines in place to power site
Two wind turbines have been installed at the Loftsome Bridge Water Treatment Works near Howden as part of Yorkshire Water's commitment to reducing carbon emissions. On a windy day, the turbines will power the whole site.
The main parts of the turbines were delivered in 30-metre sections with the help of a 500-tonne crane.
The turbines will on average provide more than a third of Loftsome Bridge's energy needs. By using the electricity generated by the turbines at the site, Yorkshire Water will be reducing its carbon emissions by around 2,300 tonnes every year.
The turbines will also make a significant contribution towards achieving the company's green energy target, which is to generate ten per cent of its electrical needs by 2010.
Mike Ward, wind turbine project manager at Yorkshire Water, said: "We believe that investing in alternative, sustainable sources of energy is responsible given the context of the increasing energy prices, uncertainty over long-term security of supply of energy and the requirement for companies to reduce their carbon emissions."
Alongside the new turbines, Yorkshire Water has also invested £15.7 million in specialist equipment to improve the water quality at the Loftsome Bridge treatment works. (08-11-67 GT)
