WI meeting

Published on 1st November 2007 in News

Three hundred women from all over East Yorkshire gathered at Longcroft School in Beverley for the autumn council meeting of the East Yorkshire Federation of Women's Institutes on Saturday, October 13.

Graham Stuart, MP, addressed members about his fight to retain local community hospitals which, he said, were a valuable and much needed asset to the local communities and under threat through Government cutbacks.

Lyn Antill from the Project Linus UK Charity challenged the members to produce quilts for abused or traumatised children and premature babies.

The afternoon speaker was Bishop Stephen talking on 'Old Frocks and New Habits'. Bishop Stephen is a bishop in the Orthodox Church and told of his life, first as a teacher, then as a curator for the costume collection at Castle Howard.

He described his decision to become a monk in the Orthodox Church and finally his being ordained as a Bishop.

He now lives and works in York, working amongst the poor and needy. His talk was both amusing and informative and he entertained with stories from a life very different from most.
