Town-centre roads get new restrictions

Published on 25th October 2007 in News

Goole's town centre streets are subject to more parking restrictions in a bid to make shopping easier.

Measures have been imposed on 13 streets in Goole, including 'one-hour waiting' on Montague Street, Gordon Street and Jefferson Street.

However, it is understood that this only applies to the Boothferry Road end of these streets, near to the shops.

The restrictions were brought in after a consultation by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) two years ago showed that the balance of opinion was against a controlled parking zone (CPZ). Such a zone would have involved a residents' parking permits scheme being introduced.

An ERYC spokesperson said: "When the council took the decision not to proceed with the CPZ, members felt it was important to introduce some road-safety measures, such as double yellow lines and limited waiting bays, which increase the turnover of potential customers for the shops nearby."

Most of the limited waiting bays are around the shopping area. "It will increase the turnover of vehicles being parked in the bays which will increase the number of potential customers for shopkeepers and make motorists better able to find a space," the spokesperson said.

"The proposals have been advertised in the local press as statutorily required and notices with relevant drawings were also put up on site, all of which was to allow members of the public to support, comment on or object to the proposals.

"The parking bay for police vehicles only in Estcourt Terrace is one of these measures. There were no objections to this proposal when it was advertised."
