Gated-off road to be discussed

Published on 25th October 2007 in News

A public road which was gated off in Newport and sparked outrage amongst locals is to be discussed at East Riding Council's next overview and scrutiny committee meeting.

The road that runs between Thimblehall Lane and Canal Side West, also known as the M62 access road, was gated off by Mr Kevin Clifford of the Hull and District Anglers Association, preventing anyone from using it when it had been in public use for over 20 years.

Signs on the gates declared the road 'private' with 'no unauthorised access'. Mr Clifford stated that what he had done was not unlawful.

This has meant that local horse riders, and motorised scooters, used by some of Newport's disabled residents, cannot get through the narrow gap that has been left.

A petition with eighteen names on it, mainly those of Newport residents, was sent to East Riding's Environment and Transport Committee to request a determination to be made at the next Area Development Control Committee.

The overview and scrutiny committee meeting will be held at County Hall, Cross Street in Beverly nextWednesday, October 31 at 10am.
