Failing to attend a drugs assessment after forgetting her appointment landed one addict from Goole in custody last week.

Samantha Roswell (30), of Montrose Drive, pleaded guilty to failing to attend a follow-up drugs assessment when she appeared in custody before Goole Magistrates' Court last Friday.

Prosecutor Andrew Stirling told the court that Miss Roswell was arrested on July 6 this year on suspicion of a drugs offence and as a result she was ordered to take a drugs test, which showed traces of Class A drugs in her blood.

Miss Roswell was ordered to attend a follow-up assessment on July 12, but failed to show and made no contact with the drugs team in Goole, a move that led to her arrest on September 28.

In interview Miss Roswell fully admitted that she had not attended, but offered no explanation for the no-show.

Defending, John Seagrave said his client had been a drug addict for the 'best part' of ten years. She had been recovering from her addiction earlier this year, when she learned that her partner had formed a new relationship; she went back into drug taking.

Mr Seagrave told the court that Miss Roswell had forgotten precisely when her follow-up assessment was due, but she had made recent attempts to get help for her addiction.

Until her appearance at Goole Magistrates' Court on Friday, Miss Roswell had been in custody for three weeks. Mr Seagrave told magistrates that she had been 'clean' throughout that time.

"Three weeks in custody is punishment enough," he said.

Magistrates ordered that Miss Roswell complete a 12-month community order, to include a specified activity for a minimum of 60 days.

She was also ordered to attend regular appointments at the East Riding Partnership offices in Goole to get help with her addiction.

No costs were awarded.
