Jailed over 'senseless' OAP attack

Published on 25th October 2007 in News

A Goole man has been jailed for two and a half years after what the police have described as "an unprovoked and senseless" attack on a pensioner.

Matthew Card (34), of Kingsway, pleaded guilty to the assault, which took place on Tuesday, May 29.

His 65-year-old victim suffered the loss of several teeth, a black eye, cuts, bruises and swelling to his face.

A Hull Crown Court on Friday Mr Card was sentenced to two years in prison for the assault and six months for perverting the course of justice.

Speaking after the court case, Detective Sergeant Gavin Orsbourne, who led the investigation, said: "This was an unprovoked and senseless attack on a 65-year-old man who was able to offer no resistance to his attacker.

"Furthermore, Card felt that he could then cajole a key witness to the attack to lie on his behalf in order to protect his own liberty.

"Since the assault, the victim has lost his confidence and does not go out of his home as often as he did before the incident."
