A family man from Goole has been sentenced to a conditional discharge after admitting stealing fish fingers and a lady shaver from a supermarket on the spur of the moment.
Matthew Bentley (27), of Moorland Road pleaded guilty to the shoplifting charge when he appeared before Goole Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.
Prosecutor Caroline Ostler told the court that police were called to the town's Netto supermarket at around 1.30pm on September 21, following reports that a man was being held by security staff for attempting to steal the shaver.
Mr Bentley offered to pay for the razor but, after being searched, was found to have two packs of fish fingers on his person.
The court heard that the total value of the goods that Mr Bentley attempted to steal was £1.73.
Appearing unrepresented in court, Mr Bentley told magistrates: "It was a spur of the moment thing. It's not really like me to do anything like that."
Magistrates issued Mr Bentley with a 12-month conditional discharge, and ordered that he pay £50 towards court costs.
