Boost for Castaway
A theatre group in Goole is looking forward to choruses of 'He's behind you' after being granted £10,000 of Lottery funding.
Castaway, a musical theatre group for people with disabilities, has been given a grant which will cover the costs leading to four performances of their Christmas pantomime - Dick Whittington - at The Gate and a show next summer.
The group began as an informal organisation but recently gained charity status and has plans to expand into projects such as the youth theatre group, Shipmates. They have also been chosen as one of the Mayor of Goole's charities.
Carol Hodson, co-director at Castaway, said: "The group was originally started to give people with learning and physical disabilities an opportunity to take part in the performing arts and have fun.
"But we have talented performers and our shows have been very popular, so we decided to put ourselves on a more formal footing to develop our performing and stagecraft activities.
"The company has some 40 people, and the Awards for All grant will cover costs of acting and singing workshops, rehearsals for the shows and workshops in making scenery and costumes. Because our performers have disabilities, our transport costs are quite high and the grant will also cover their journeys to rehearsals and the shows."
The money has been award through the Lottery's Awards for All scheme, which administers awards of between £3,000 and £10,000 to community groups and voluntary organisations. Arts Council England, Big Lottery Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund and Sport England are the good cause funders.
Vanessa White, head of Big Lottery Fund in Yorkshire and the Humber, said on behalf of the Awards for All funders: "These latest grants are great news for people living in our region. They show the huge difference Awards for All funding can make to local communities."
Dick Whittington will be performed at The Gate on Dunhill Road between December 12 and 15. Booking opens on October 29.
