Plans are under way to ensure that Goole's entry into the 2008 Yorkshire in Bloom competition is even more successful than this year's entry that saw the town bag itself two awards.

Last week, members of the Goole in Bloom committee met Roger Burnett, judge from this year's competition and employee in Scarborough Borough Council's horticultural department, to celebrate this success and find ways to improve next year.

The Goole in Bloom committee was also thrilled to learn that it is to be featured in a Britain in Bloom DVD, aimed at groups entering the competition for the first time.

In September, the town was presented with a silver award in the small town categories after judges were taken on a spring tour in April and a summer tour in July, visiting landmarks such as the clock tower roundabout, the Waterways Museum and Riverside Gardens,

And there was a second success for the town when the judges, who visited Parkside School as part of their tour, were so impressed with the establishment that the school was advised to enter a category on its own.

Parkside did so and was presented with a silver-gilt award, which is only one below the highest accolade, a gold award.

Speaking after last week's meeting Brian Robertson, clerk to Goole Town Council, told the Goole Times that the committee went through this year's entries in a bid to find ways to improve next year.

He said: "Mr Burnett was very positive about our entry, and was pleased with what we had achieved in such a short space of time, and as first time entrants.

"He told us the areas that we were strong in and what we could build upon."

The committee discussed the possibility of introducing a gardens competition next year for the public, as part of the Goole in Bloom, and asked Mr Burnett for advice on areas such as how many categories should be included.

If the new competition is launched, the closing date for entries will be in June, with judging taking place in mid-July.

Mr Robertson added: "The next step is to plan for next year's itinerary, eradicate weaknesses and build on the strengths that have been identified."
