HORROR CRASH

Three people died and a fourth was arrested after a seven-vehicle pile-up on the M62 at West Cowick on Friday.

The accident happened around 6.45pm near the M18 junction at Langham and involved six cars and a lorry.

The driver of a Vauxhall Cavalier was pronounced dead at the scene after her car plunged down the embankment, along with her nephew, who was a back-seat passenger.

Police have named the pair as Jayne Parkhouse (36) and Stephen Parkhouse (17), both of Bridlington but not of the same address.

David Goodridge (52), of Retford, was taken to hospital after his Honda CRV overturned. He later died of his injuries in Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

Six other people were injured in the accident and were taken to the same hospital. Their injuries were said by police not to be life-threatening.

A spokesperson for Humberside Fire and Rescue said that one car had come to a halt down the embankment. Sadly, the people inside were pronounced dead at the scene.

Motorists are reported to have helped tend to the walking wounded.

Five ambulances were sent to the scene and around 20 firefighters and a rescue support unit.

Initial reports suggest that all the vehicles were intending to leave the M62 and take the slip road onto the M18.

The other vehicles involved were a Vauxhall Vectra, a Ford Galaxy, a Mercedes Sprinter panel van and a Volkswagen Passat.

The slip road onto the M18 and the section of the M62 between Langham and Junction 36 (Glew's Garage)was closed for nearly 12 hours, and was reopened at 6.12am on Saturday. Traffic was diverted through Rawcliffe until the road could safely be reopened.

As a result of the incident, a 54-year-old man from Hull was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been released on police bail pending further inquiries until December.
