A Goole-based company that designs and constructs emergency transport and community-accessible vehicles is doing its bit for the community by taking on nine apprentices from the Goole area and turning them into experts in their field.

Oughtred and Harrison (Facilities) Ltd has been based in Goole for nearly 20 years, supplying converted vehicles to the NHS and the disabled community. The firm recently selected nine young school leavers from the local community to become first-class apprentices.

The young men spend four days a week enjoying 'on-the-job' training at the Larsen Road site, and a further day each week on day release, learning the theoretical side of their future trade.

Mick Rands, production director at Oughtred and Harrison (Facilities) Ltd, told the Goole Times: "We don't put an end date on the apprentices' contracts, and by training them from a young age we are looking at their long-term futures, as well as the future of the business."

Eight of the apprentices are training to be coachbuilders, mechanics and electricians, whilst one apprentice is being trained to work in the computer-aided design (CAD) department.

This is the first time that Oughtred and Harrison (Facilities) Ltd has taken on multiple apprentices. The company works alongside the Group Training Association (GTA) in Doncaster, as well as Doncaster College and Connexions.

Mick Rands added: "There are not a lot of training organisations that deal with our line of work so we work alongside the existing in order to achieve the same aim."
