There is a coolness in the air, and even though there have been a few sunny days, the sun is low and there is not the summer heat.
The butterflies seem to have gone into hibernation, and I miss the constant twitter of the house martins around the house.
However, I now have the noisy sound of geese as they pass over in ever-increasing V formations.
There are long-tailed tits whistling down the hedgerow, and the plaintiff song from the robin, and there are blackbirds fighting for territory of all the berries and crab apples in my garden.
There are plenty to go round, but the blackbirds are very possessive and aggressive in their ownership.
October is the time for Fungus Forays and I think the conditions have been right for a good crop.
Just walking round the garden I see a few on the lawn, including a fairy ring, and in a local wood they are erupting in abundance.
A lot of cookery programmes now include wild mushrooms in their recipes, but if you want to help yourself to some for free, you really do need to be sure of what you are picking because there are a few poisonous toadstools that are very similar to edible mushrooms, so do be very careful and know what you are picking.
