A driver who was seen to narrowly miss colliding with a barrier and was later found to be more than three times over the drink-drive limit has been banned for 28 months.

Jan Debowski (49), of Jefferson Street, appeared at the town's magistrates' court on Tuesday and admitted driving while over the prescribed limit.

Tests showed that he had had 114mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath - more than three times the legal drink-drive limit of 35mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

Prosecuting, Andrew Stirling said that at around 10am on September 29, Mr Debowski was seen driving a Ford Mondeo.

His driving was erratic, and a witness said he almost collided with a metal barrier.

Mr Stirling said that the defendant had been seen to cross the carriageway a number of times while on Boothferry Road, and when he pulled up to stop, a member of the public removed the keys from the ignition.

"He co-operated with the police," Mr Stirling said.

"He stated that he had gone to a visit a friend and had drunk some beer with his friends.

"He said he hadn't intended to drive but he argued with his friends and got into his car to go home."

In his defence, the court heard that Mr Debowski was not a regular heavy drinker, and usually only had a social drink once a month, This partly explained why the reading was so high.

Magistrates disqualified Mr Debowski from driving for 28 months, and ordered him to complete 60 hours of unpaid work and pay £40 costs.
