Family scoop £250,000 on Thunderball
The famous words 'It could be you' came true for one Goole couple last week when they scooped a whopping £250,000 on the National Lottery's Thunderball jackpot.
Adam Martin (40), and his wife Teresa (32) were over the moon when they learned that their regular lottery numbers had bagged them a quarter of £1m after buying a Thunderball ticket from Chappelow News on Westfield Avenue.
Teresa was at home with her sister on September 29 when she received a telephone call from her mother to let her know that a selection of the couple's regular numbers had come up on the Thunderball draw.
"I was just in shock," said Teresa.
"When I found out, my sister and I got the tickets out and checked them on TV. This kind of thing never seems to happen to anyone you know!"
Adam added that he was at work at Guardian Glass when he received the call from his wife.
He said: "When Teresa called and told me we had won, I thought it was a wind-up.
"In fact, I still find it hard to believe. It is an incredible feeling."
The win could not have come at a better time for the couple, who have recently celebrated the birth of twin girls, Hannah and Laura. Along with eight-year-old Charlotte and five-year-old Jessica, space in the family home is becoming an issue, and both Adam and Teresa spoke this week of their plans to use the windfall to extend the family home.
Adam said: "With the twins, we now have four children, so space is becoming a big issue. Now thanks to the win we can build an extension, as well as putting something aside for the future.
"We are also planning a trip to Scotland. Teresa has sponsored a dolphin at a sanctuary for a few years but we have never actually been able to go and see it.
"But now, we will be able to visit the sanctuary and enjoy a family holiday!"
The couple have used the same numbers on the lottery for the past three years and on the day in question, the winning Thunderball numbers were 9, 16, 19, 27, 32 and Thunderball 6.
In spite of their plans, the couple insist that they intend to keep a sense of normality. Adam plans to continue working at Guardian Glass, while Teresa is currently on maternity leave from Hook Hall residential home.
Shaun Chappelow, proprietor at Chappelow News in Westfield Avenue where the winning ticket was bought, said that the shop sold two winning tickets on the same weekend, although the other lucky winner does not wish to be named.
He said: "I am very happy that it has happened to someone in Goole. This couldn't have happened to a nicer couple.
"Teresa was straight in the shop on Monday morning to tell us the happy news."
Mr Chappelow added that, despite rumours that he had made a large profit from the winning ticket, he had in fact only made the standard five pence profit from the sale of the ticket.
