Council defend officer checks
The East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) has hit back at criticism about the way its housing officers are checked.
A Goole resident, who asked not to be named, contacted the council to express "some concern regarding ERYC technical officers who are employed to inspect tenanted properties in Goole that are classed as homes of multiple occupancy.
"These houses are tenanted mostly by foreign nationals who range from teenagers to elderly family members aged 70 and over.
"Many have little or no English language, and the most vulnerable are left at home during the day while other occupants work.
"It is during this time that technical officers visit.
"Unlike other departments within the ERYC who visit vulnerable people, these officers do not have any form of criminal bureau checks, so allowing the potential for any unscrupulous person to be employed."
A spokesman for the ERYC told the Goole Times: "The officers who carry out these checks are highly professional and the protection of vulnerable people, often from unscrupulous landlords providing unsafe accommodation, is one of their prime concerns.
"New employees in this section are CRB checked."
