A BUILDER has been died following a freak accident involving plant machinery at Drax Power Station, which occurred last Friday, September 28).

Just after 3pm, Alwyne Parkinson (59) was fatally struck by the bucket of an extractor digger as he carried out building work at the site.

He died three days later, on Monday, October 1, from the injuries he sustained in the incident.

Mr Parkinson was working on the site as a contractor for Grimsby-based building outfit Clark Construction.

Full details of how the accident occurred have not been revealed, but an emergency response was implemented straight away and Mr Parkinson was taken to York District Hospital by ambulance.

A spokesperson for Drax said: "It is with deep regret that we confirm the death of a contractor involved in an incident at Drax Power Station.

'Site emergency plans were enacted immediately and the injured man was taken to hospital by the emergency services.

"Our thoughts and sympathy are with his family." The incident is now the subject of a full investigation by the power station company alongside Clark Construction, the Health and Safety Executive and North Yorkshire police.

A police spokesperson said: "North Yorkshire Police are conducting a joint investigation with the Health and Safety Executive following an industrial accident at Drax.

"Mr Parkinson suffered fatal injuries after being struck by the bucket of an excavator.

"He died at York District Hospital on Monday, October 1. An inquest into his death was opened and adjourned on Tuesday, October 2."

Mr Parkinson lived with his family in Almond Grove, Brigg,

The accident is the second to befall contractors at the plant this year.
