A distraught Gilberdyke woman has spoken out this week about her fears that her two cats have been poisoned by a local resident after both animals recently went missing and have failed to return home.

The resident, who has asked not to be named, told the Goole Times that around three weeks ago one of her cats went missing, leaving her family upset but hopeful for their pet's safe return as they went around the village distributing missing posters.

But when the second family cat went missing last week, the Gilberdyke resident began to fear that the animals had not simply strayed.

The resident said: "My second cat has also failed to return home, leaving me in no doubt that they have not actually lost their way but that something more sinister has happened, and someone knows what."

Fearing that her pets have been poisoned, the Gilberdyke woman has issued a message to the resident who may have been behind the attack.

She said: "To the Gilberdyke resident, who for the last three weeks has seen my 'missing' posters and may also have seen me and my children out shouting for our family cat, I understand that you maybe do not like cats in your garden, however a clap to frighten them off would suffice.

"I now think you have put out poison or something equally as wicked to stop this, as my second cat has now not returned home.

"I cannot believe residents of what I thought to be a friendly and safe village could be capable of such cruel and heartless acts. I hope you are happy with your results that have left one family devastated and forever wondering what actually happened to their much-loved pets.

"What goes around, comes around."

Earlier this year, investigations were undertaken by the RSPCA after a dog was poisoned in Pentland Avenue in Goole, allegedly by the potentially lethal insecticide Temik. A bowl containing water, bread and, allegedly the chemical were confiscated from the front garden of a house.

Fire crews cordoned off the area, and fire officers wearing chemical protection suits and breathing apparatus removed the dish and its contents from one of the front gardens.

The dog involved made a fully recovery but the incident brought forward a number of Goole residents who claimed that their pet cats and dogs had also suffered similar attacks in the Goole area.
