Waterways' £60,000 bid
'Vote for us!' is the urgent message from community groups in Goole preparing to back a televised bid for £60,000.
The Waterways Museum, on Dutch Riverside, is hoping to win funding for a project which involves converting old allotments in Old Goole into a community resource to encourage more people to eat fresh, local produce.
'Roots to Shoots' has been shortlisted from thousands of projects and within the next few weeks Clare Hunt, operations manager at the museum, will appear on the ITV show People's Millions to present their case.
The eight shortlisted projects from Yorkshire will be shown on Calendar over four days, with two representatives appearing per night.
At the end of each programme the public will vote on which of the two projects receives their funding.
Clare Hunt said: "It's great to get through to the last eight.
"The first bit is a simple application, then we put together a delivery plan and we've just had a site visit to prove it is deliverable.
"Volunteers would be able to come and work on the allotments, and the children's centre and the schools will be involved.
"It will improve access to fresh, local produce and promote healthy living."
Filming will take place between October 29 and November 23, and the programmes will be broadcast from November 26. The Moorlands Centre in Old Goole, which already uses local ingredients for their meals, is a project partner.
Company secretary Pat O'Neil said: "We're absolutely delighted to have been shortlisted.
"The idea behind it is that we source fresh produce locally.
"It's a good project in that we can involve young people.
"There'll be facilities for all the family - it's about giving people the opportunity to have a healthier lifestyle."
Details of the museum's opponents have not yet been revealed but Clare and Pat are both worried that a big city project will automatically get more votes.
"We're concerned that Goole is a tiny place," Clare said. "There are lots more people in Leeds, for example, who would just pick up the phone and vote.
"The big message is 'vote for us!'."
People's Millions is a partnership between the Big Lottery Fund and ITV, which enables television viewers to vote for the project they want to receive lottery funding.
