The Marshlands Children's Centre in Goole was officially declared open at a fun-filled ceremony last Friday.

Parents, children and local professionals were invited to look around and the chairman of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Cllr Barbara Jefferson, cut a ceremonial cake.

The centre, which offers services to families with children under five, first opened its doors in April.

Julie Tarrant, centre co-ordinator, said around 150 families had already taken advantage of the facilities.

"We offer services around children, such as pre-school groups, and some around adults, such as behaviour management courses, with a creche for children," she said.

"Friday was lovely - lots of children and parents came."

Goole MP Ian Cawsey said: "This is an absolutely brilliant new facility for Old Goole. The Government has a policy of eventually having Children Centres in every district and we know they make a real difference to local families.

"Children's Centres developed from the Surestart Scheme and are designed to give health and educational support to pre-school children and their parents. But they offer all kinds of support and assistance and this new centre will be an excellent resource for people in Old Goole.

"It is another major Government investment in the town, this time arond £1.2 million, and has been well delivered through the efforts of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council and their partners. I am sure it will serve us well for years to come."
