Newport distribution centre plans receive green light from council
Plan for a new distribution centre in Newport have been given the go ahead, despite 'serious reservations' from local councillors about the effect on locals.
Members of an East Riding of Yorkshire Council planning committee deferred making a decision on the application to build industrial and distribution units on land south of Mathews Haulage in May, because they had not received information from Public Protection.
It also emerged that Newport Parish Council had not been consulted about the plans, and the responses of both bodies were considered at the ERYC western area planning meeting on Tuesday.
The development, proposed by Wallingfen Park Ltd, is 100 metres from the B1230 and 50 metres east of Wallingfen Lane. An embankment and a hedge separate the nearest houses, on Wallingfen Lane, from the site.
Letters of objection have been received and parish councillors were quoted in the report as having "serious reservations" about the plans, particularly noise pollution and the effect on the existing drainage.
A report detailing the council's concerns said: "The drainage network to the south of the site is already under severe stress and in periods of heavy rain and persistent rainfall is unable to cope with the 'normal' rate of agricultural run-off."
The Public Protection committee was also concerned about noise, which members felt could be intrusive, and requested that the planning committee should consider attaching conditions to planning approval.
No details of the site's activities have been given.
The development was approved, subject to a number of conditions relating to drainage, landscaping, construction materials and access.
