Goole MP Ian Cawsey is continuing his support for Rawcliffe Post Office, whose proprietor is campaigning for signs on the road through the village pointing out the location of his business.

Last Friday Mr Cawsey went to Rawcliffe Post Office to pick up a petition of more than 500 signatures from the postmaster, Gary Brown, calling on the East Riding of Yorkshire Council to put up signs.

Mr Cawsey had previously written to the council asking for this but the council had refused to do allow the signs.

The MP said: "Rawcliffe Post Office provides an important service for local people but could also have a good passing trade, given its position next to the village green where there is a lot of through traffic.

"A simple sign pointing out the convenience of this post office to those passing through the village would be an easy way of boosting their numbers and protecting the future of the post office for local people.

"I know that Gary has produced evidence of such signs in other areas and most local people can remember that a former local restaurant used to have a sign - which rather destroys the council's view that they should not advertise a business, though in any case I would argue that a post office is more than just a business."

Mr Cawsey is now going to write to the chief executive of the ERYC asking him to look at the situation again in light of the strong local support and to see what he is willing to do to assist.

He added: "I have always said that local councils can have a big role in supporting the post office network. I actually was referring to them using post offices as deliverers of council information and services, which some councils do. But I would have thought that a sign was the least they could do.

"The council has previously passed resolutions calling for everyone's support and efforts to help local post offices. This is their chance to show that this was not just words. I hope they respond positively to this petition and that they are able to assist."
