Goole residents finally have something to smile about this summer after scooping not one but two awards in the Yorkshire In Bloom competition.

The town was presented with a silver award in the small town categories after judges were taken on a spring tour in April and a summer tour in July.

Kingsway allotments, Riverside Gardens, the Waterways Museum and the clock tower roundabout were among the sites visited and the marks from both visits were added together.

The Goole in Bloom committee was unaware of the town's success until the results were read out at a ceremony on Tuesday at the Guildhall in Hull. Brian Robertson, clerk to Goole Town Council, and Cllr Jean Kitchen, mayor of Goole, both attended.

"We thought we'd be lucky to get bronze," said Mr Robertson. "They were read out in reverse order so when we weren't in that list, we thought, uh-oh.

"We were thrilled with the silver. There's a lot of organisations to thank who have worked hard throughout the competition."

Goole in Bloom is an Urban Renaissance project, with Goole Town Council as a lead partner. It is the first time that Goole has entered the competition for several years.

There was also good news for staff and pupils returning to Parkside School on Wednesday.

Both tours included a visit to the school and the judges were so impressed with Parkside that they advised them to enter a category on their own.

They did so, and were awarded a silver gilt award, only one below the highest accolade, a gold award.

"We're chuffed to bits," said head teacher Brian Morris. "It's fantastic. The kids have planted all the flowers, shrubs and trees."

Congratulations also come from Goole MP Ian Cawsey, who said: "I am extremely proud that Goole, Parkside and the residents have been recognised for all their efforts in improving the area, and working as a community to improve the local environment.

"It is testament to the commitment of local residents to improve the local area."

There will be a meeting today (Thursday) to discuss the judges' feedback. The committee is already thinking about next year's entry and Mr Robertson said: "Next year, Goole is going for gold."
