A man who was caught with drugs while he chatted to police has been given a conditional discharge.

Daniel Lawrence Severn (21), who is from Goole but is currently on remand in Hull Prison, appeared in Goole Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, charged with possessing diamorphine and diazepam.

Andrew Sterling, for the Crown Prosecution Service, told the court that the drugs had been found on May 12 when police had carried out a search of Mr Severn's car. Around 60 tablets of diazepam were found, along with tinfoil bearing a thin residue of heroin.

In his defence, the court heard that Mr Severn had been introduced to drugs while serving time in prison on a previous occasion.

"When he was released, he experimented," his solicitor said.

He explained that Mr Severn had had an "informal chat" with the police, during which time it was observed that his client "wasn't particularly with it."

"It's a small habit, and his first offence relating to a Class A drug," he added.

Magistrates said they had taken into consideration Mr Severn's unusual circumstances and gave him a conditional discharge for 18 months.

They also ordered him to pay £40 in costs, and that the drugs be confiscated.
