Howden Festival looks set to be an extra-special event year after the committee was awarded £5,000.

The committee was "delighted" to learn it has been given an arts award by the Arts Council England.

A spokesperson said: "The grant will help enable the 2007 Howden Festival, which runs from September 15 to 23 in various venues in Howden, to showcase a wide variety of high class, national and international artists, with something for everyone to enjoy."

Among the highlights of the festival will be a performance by the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band, who will play a 'Last Night of the Proms' in Howden Minster on Wednesday, September 19.

Guests are asked to bring along flags and get into the prom spirit. Hailing from South Elmsall, the colliery band has a long and successful history, competing in and winning at some of the most prestigious competitions in the world.

The concert will open with a selection of mixed pieces and solo items, with the second half given over entirely to the "Proms". The concert begins at 7.45pm and tickets cost £10 and £8 for concessions.
