Cawsey supports pig farmers bid
Goole MP Ian Cawsey has shown his support for a campaign by UK pig farmers to highlight how cheap, low-welfare imports are deceiving consumers and damaging the UK pig industry. He signed the giant 'Trojan' pig that spent an evening in the gardens of Westminster Abbey as part of the national campaign.
He said: "This is not an anti-import campaign. This is about ensuring a level playing field for British pig farmers. Unclear labelling gives importers an advantage, deceives British consumers and damages our own pig industry.
"I know this is an issue that I have pursued for some time now, but it is an important message to get across. We have some of the best animal welfare standards in the world in our pig farms and the best way of supporting these standards is to ensure that if you buy pork, bacon, gammon, ham or any other related product that it is sourced from the UK.
"Consumers have great power in their hands and here is a great reason to support local farmers. Don't be afraid to ask your butcher, or wherever you buy your meat, where it comes from. If they cannot guarantee it is British say you'll take your trade elsewhere. They'll soon get the message!"
The Trojan Pig is currently visiting towns and cities across the UK to raise awareness of the issue of cheap, lower welfare imports.
