Country Notes
Well, has summer finally arrived?
We have certainly been enjoying some glorious sunny days, and the farmers have been working round the clock frantically getting in their harvest.
I have even seen fields ploughed up ready for the next crop - but I keep waiting for the next rains to fall.
Until then, I have been enjoying the sun and butterfly watching.
My buddleia has been in full flower and has attracted a good selection of butterflies. All the usuals, but in particular the Peacock butterfly.
I counted 14 Peacocks on it last week, their eyes glinting at me in the sunshine.
However, I'm afraid I am going to end on a sad note. Driving around I have seen a number of road kills: hedgehogs, rabbits, pheasants and foxes, but the other day I found at the roadside a Little Owl.
It had such beautifully-marked plumage, and it seemed so sad that this bird of prey had been the victim of a passing car or truck.
I have not seen a Little Owl before, alive, although I have heard of sightings of them in the area.
Such a pity that the first one I did see was a dead one.
