A Goole man has been fined £100 and ordered to pay compensation to his victim when he was found guilty of assaulting another man.

Paul Coulter (46) of Eastgate flats, pleaded guilty to a charge of common assault when he appeared before Goole Magistrates' Court.

Prosecutor Mrs Julie Laverack Glanville told the court that on July 7 the complainant had a verbal disagreement with Mr Coulter's nephew on a stairwell in Eastgate flats.

Later that evening, while the victim was at a friend's home within the complex, Mr Coulter knocked at the door with two other men. He tried to force his way into the home when when the complainant refused to let him in.

Mr Coulter managed to gain entry and began punching the victim "numerous times" in the face, splitting his lip and causing bruising behind his left ear before leaving with his two friends.

The man was unsure as to whether more than one man attacked him as he was shielding his face for protection, but the court heard that Mr Coulter admitted in police interview that he was fully responsible for the attack.

Mr Coulter was not represented by a solicitor and did not issue a statement to the court in his defence.

When asked, he told magistrates that he had been drinking on the evening that the attack happened and assured the court that the disagreement between the pair had since ended.

Magistrates told Mr Coulter: "You have let yourself down. You were keeping yourself out of trouble, and now you are back in trouble."

Mr Coulter was fined £100 and ordered to pay compensation to the victim in the sum of £50. He was also ordered to pay £55 towards court costs and a compulsory victim surcharge of £15.
