Residents are being warned to stay alert throughout the summer for hoax callers who may take advantage of the warm weather to pose as gardeners or other traders.

Suspicious behaviour has already been reported in Gilberdyke, when a man in a maroon Mercedes visited a property on Westbrook Crescent on Monday, July 30, claiming to be working for a company employed by the occupant's insurers to carry out repairs to flood damage.

He asked the resident to move out of the property but the request was refused and the caller left.

A phone call to the resident's insurers confirmed that the caller had not been sent by them.

No crime was committed and a police spokesperson said that hoax callers usually moved on after a few days or when they were denied access.

However, officers are asking residents to remain vigilant over the summer and to report any suspicious activity or callers to police.

Residents have been advised to ask for identification before allowing callers into their homes. Identification should be checked with the company that the caller claims to be working for.

In the case of flood damage repairs it is also advisable to check with insurance companies on the name of the workmen who are due to attend and, if possible, to arrange an exact time with the companies to avoid genuine workmen arriving unannounced. Residents who have any doubts are advised to refuse callers access to their homes and to call the police.
