Teen scoops dressage championship title
A teenager from Balkholme, near Howden, is celebrating after recently being crowned the Dressage Under 21s UK Champion at a competition in Buckinghamshire.
Fourteen-year-old Fiona Brennan won the prestigious title in July when she made the journey to Addington, with her fellow team mates, who were nicknamed the Yorkie Girls and were all trained in Ellerker by Julie Blanchard.
Fiona began riding when she was eight years old and since then, she has been 'pony mad', according to her mum, Alison. Fiona hopes to go on to become a professional in her field in the future.
Alison said: "I think the team surprised people at the competition because there was a strong contribution from the south.
"There were four dressage tests taking place over two days, so the riders have got to be consistent and when they are still so young, this is a hard thing for them to do.
"All of the team had to have qualified in order to attend the final, so when they came home with a bundle of wins and also some top honours, we felt justifiably proud.
"We knew that competition would be stiff, but it was monumental for the team to do so well. We are all still on a high from it."
