Doctor retires after 35 years
A doctor who has served the communities of Holme on Spalding Moor and Bubwith for nearly 35 years received a warm send-off from friends and colleagues recently when he retired.
Shortly before his retirement on July 20, Dr Richard Moore treated 77 invited guests to some of the stories of his career. He described how, when he started working from the Market Weighton practice, which also covered Bubwith, he worked in a converted Land Army hut in Bubwith, where the drugs were administered either by the handful or half-handful and patients' notes were handwritten, with no copies kept, no computer, no secretary and no accounts.
At the end of 1977 the Market Weighton practice split in two and Dr Moore got the 'rural' portion, which covered Holme on Spalding Moor and Bubwith. He then had the care of 3,500 patients on his own during that winter, as there was a vacancy.
In March, 1978 Dr Jerry Marsden joined the practice and, together with a number of new colleagues, the new practice moved forward with new buildings at Holme on Spalding Moor and Bubwith, gradually evolving into the current facility that serves the community well.
Dr Moore told the assembly at his retirement party that he would miss the camaraderie and banter that had been the hallmark of such a well-run ship over the years.
Now in retirement, he is looking forward to spending time with his wife Sheila and their grandchildren, and hopes to have some spare time to dedicate to his hobbies, which include photography and gardening. (09-08-51 SU)
