Newport blaze
Fire crews from Goole, Howden, Brough and Barton worked for more than six hours to bring a fire at a Newport tip under control yesterday.
The fire, at a landfill site off Thimble Hall Lane, broke out shortly before midnight on Tuesday and involved around 30 square metres of a three-metre-deep stack of tyres and ten square metres of refuse.
A water support unit was requested and water was relayed along the M62 from Newport Canal, nearly a mile away.
At the peak of the fire 25 firefighters using three main water jets and two ground monitors were involved.
Fire crews worked throughout the night and one lane of the westbound M62 was closed to traffic for safety reasons.
All the fire crews were expected to have returned by yesterday lunchtime.
The East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC)'s environmental health officer monitored the smoke from the fire and monitored the plume.
Glenn Ramsden, spokesperson for Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, said: "This was a severe fire which had to be dealt with rapidly to limit any environmental impact.
"Humberside Fire and Rescue service worked very closely with the local council to ensure that operations were carried out in the most effective way possible."
