Police are warning residents planning summer holidays to make their homes as safe as possible after a burglary in Rawcliffe.

Thieves smashed a back patio door in order to enter a property on Riverside Court between 9pm last Friday and 8.55am on Saturday.

They carried out an untidy search and stole a plasma-screen television - it is not known at the moment if other items were taken as well.

The burglary was discovered by a relative who checked the house on Friday night, when all was well, and then again on Saturday morning.

House-to-house inquiries have been conducted in the area and scenes of crime officers have attended the house.

Detective Sergeant Wescott has issued advice in the light of the number of similar incidents recently.

"There have been a number of burglaries at homes in Howden and the surrounding areas where the residents have been away on their holidays," he said.

"I would advise residents to, if possible, get friends and relatives to check on houses, to open and draw curtains and remove post and newspapers from letter-boxes.

"If possible, use a timer on lights to give the feel that the occupants are at home and keep valuables out of sight so as not to tempt a would-be burglar towards the address."

Anyone who witnessed anyone acting suspiciously around Riverside Court or who may have been offered a plasma-screen television for sale is asked to contact police on 0845 6060 222 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting log number 321 of 04/08/2007.
