A Rawcliffe resident has this week demanded answers from East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) in response to the news that a decision from the Council could mean that the future of the village post office will be bleak.

John Morris has responded to last week's article in the Goole Times that Rawcliffe sub-postmaster Gary Brown was refused permission to erect two small signs in the village directing the public to the post office, which is obscured from the main road by trees on the village green.

ERYC refused Mr Brown permission, claiming that businesses were not allowed to erect signs anywhere in East Yorkshire.

Resident Mr Morris said this week: "I would like to ask the East Riding Council why, in the past, a brown council sign has been erected for 'The Villa Dominics' (a former Italian restaurant on Station Road) and, similarly, a dog kennels business that has a brown sign.

"Both are businesses, just like the post office."

But a spokesperson from ERYC remained firm this week in its stance that the village post offices were not allowed to have signs erected.

The spokesperson told the Goole Times: "The Council has a policy which sets out criteria for the provision of brown 'tourism' signs and we must also work to the government's Traffic Signs Manual, which states what signs are allowed within the public highway. At the present time, neither allow the signing of a post office.

"Criteria have changed over time and it is this that explains why some businesses have signs that would not be considered now, however it is not our intention to remove these.

"For example, public houses, hotels and accommodation would not now normally have their names on a sign along with the symbol showing the facility.

"In this particular instance, Mr Brown was advised that while we could not assist, Rawcliffe Green is the responsibility of the Parish Council and they may allow him to place a sign on there, subject to gaining any necessary planning consent."
