Police want you to end graffiti hell
Police are clamping down on unauthorised 'artwork' as part of a campaign to clean up the town and cut criminal damage.
Walls, bridges, phone boxes and other surfaces in Goole are frequently daubed or sprayed with graffiti and police are hoping readers can help identify the offenders by their signatures or 'tags'.
Pc Matthew Hollingsworth told the Goole Times: "We are wanting people to come forward with information about the offenders who are committing the offence of criminal damage, and spoiling the town, which has a negative impact for everyone using it."
Walls of the ten-foots cause a particular problem, particularly for those who live on the end of a terrace.
"It's appearing everywhere," said Pc Hollingsworth.
Police are inviting residents to report graffiti in one of several ways - in person, at Goole Police Station or at one of the surgeries listed on page 10 of this week's Goole Times, by calling 0845 6060 222 or through the police website, www.humberside.police.uk
Internet users should follow the link to Operation Clean Up on the right-hand side of the page.
The region's multi-agency Neighbour-hood Action Team, which is co-ordinated by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council's Safe Communities Team, have made criminal damage in Goole a priority.
Plans are in progress for an operation later in the year to identify problem areas and clean up graffiti and other criminal damage.
Helen Wheeler, from the Safe Communities team, said that equipment for cleaning would be provided and community and residents' groups would be involved.
Similar campaigns in North and Yorkshire have proved successful, with criminal damage being reduced by 60 per cent in one area.
It is estimated that graffiti costs the country more than £1 billion a year.
