Group aim to stop animal accidents
A new group has been set up to help tackle animal casualties in the area's waterways.
In May, Goole firefighters were called upon to save at least five deer from the Aire and Calder Canal, in Rawcliffe and by the Waterways Museum.
There have also been reports of animals drowning in the Stainforth and Keadby Canal near Thorne.
The animals are prevented from climbing out because the walls are made of sheer sheet metal.
The group was initiated by Ray Collins, of Thorne, and includes the RSPCA, Associated British Ports, British Waterways, the fire service and representatives from Thorne Council and Thorne and Hatfield Moors Conservation Forum. The chair of the group, the Rt Hon Ed Miliband, said the group were looking to find ways of preventing the deers from falling in and making it easier for them to escape. One of the ways to do this would be to install more ramps on the Aire and Calder Canal and introduce them to the Stainforth and Keadby Canal. The group hope to attract the support of other bodies interested in caring for local wildlife.
