Howden Show sheep
Sir - With reference to Jacob Sheep at Howden Show and Mr Russell Dykes' letter (Readers' Page, last week), I wish to correct certain inaccuracies within that letter, namely:
1 It was certainly not 1pm when I arrived at the showground. My time of arrival can be corroborated by the Sheep steward called to the gate on my arrival.
2 Sheep do not have to be on the showground at 9.30am - see the Sheep schedule for the correct time.
3 Messrs Fenton and Brace's sheep were denied access to the showground. I was the hailer of these sheep, for which a DEFRA animal movement licence was issued.
4 As regards to health and safety matters, IU quote Mr Dykes' own words: "The showground is full. You should have come earlier." On stating that I had rung the previous day to ascertain whether the show was to be held, his reply was: "It should have been cancelled." Hardly comforting words to young exhibitors aged six and four - the future.
I agree with Mr Dykes that it was a shame that the paying public missed the Jacob sheep. If, as stated, due diligence had been shown by the show committee regarding risk assessment, health and safety, etc, where was Plan B - the provision of alternative car parking, etc?
Finally, I would like to thank past Howden Show committee members who have helped make Howden Show an enjoyable event for my family for the past 23 years.
